Virtually no other area inspires the Mercedes-Benz engineers to produce such consistently impressive results as the research into new safety technologies. They passed their first key safety milestone as early as the 1950s with the development of the passenger safety cell, invented by Béla Barényi. Today it is just one of many components of the integral safety concept which edges Mercedes-Benz vehicles ever closer to our vision of accident-free driving.

Most accidents start long before the actual collision: with a lapse in concentration, poor visibility or hazards which cannot be anticipated. That's why the Mercedes-Benz safety concept employs a range of measures to support stress-free driving in everyday operation and to help you bring critical situations under control.
This system makes it possible to drive with high beam constantly switched on without dazzling other road users. The driver thus always has the optimum headlamp range at his disposal. The function is active from a speed of 30 km/h on roads without lighting.
Using a stereo camera system located behind the windscreen, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus identifies other illuminated road users, such as oncoming vehicles or vehicles ahead, and adjusts the headlamps automatically in line with the new traffic situation. A mechanism in the headlamp module dims the relevant part of the cone of light from the LED headlamps to ensure that the other driver is not dazzled.
We always keep an eye on you. Using an analysis of your driving behaviour at speeds between 60 and 200 km/h, ATTENTION ASSIST can prompt you to take a break in good time. For your own safety.
In particular on long trips and when driving at night this system can increase driving safety. ATTENTION ASSIST monitors the steering behaviour of the driver to recognise typical signs of drowsiness and severe loss of attention, and gives a visual and audible warning of impending microsleep.
A five-level bar display visualises the current attention level of the driver. The time since the last break is also displayed and whether the system is inactive due either being below or above the speed thresholds.
The status indicator lets the driver know whether all rear-seat passengers are securely belted in. The multifunction display on the instrument cluster indicates how many rear-seat seat-belt catches are engaged with their corresponding clasps.
The display appears for around 30 seconds when a speed of around 10 km/h is reached after driving off, the rear seat passengers fasten or unfasten their seat belt when the vehicle is in motion or if people get into the vehicle or leave it.
The Head-up Display provides the driver with important information, without the driver needing to take his/her eyes off the traffic. It projects a virtual image (approx. 21 x 7 cm) within the driver's field of vision. This image appears to float over the bonnet around 2 metres ahead of the driver.
The high-resolution display is in colour. The scope of the information displayed depends on the equipment installed. A special light sensor adapts the brightness of the display in line with ambient light conditions. This makes it clearly visible in all lighting conditions, be it in strong sunlight or at night.
See and be seen more clearly: In addition to their distinctive visual appeal, the LED high-performance headlamps boost night-time driving safety thanks to broad light distribution, a daylight-simulating colour temperature, and low energy consumption.
The persuasive appeal of the clean lines, double flares and the high-quality design of the details also create an unmistakable daytime appearance. Thanks to the new LED projection technology in the dipped beam, with lenses featuring cutting-edge design and LED reflector technology in the high beam, the road surface is illuminated better than with conventional halogen headlamps.
It doesn't matter whether there is lots of oncoming traffic or if you are travelling alone on a dark country road: the MULTIBEAM LED headlamps offer a perfectly illuminated road surface at all times. They enable permanent high-beam to be engaged without dazzling other road users. A grid of individually-controllable LEDs in each headlamp directs the light precisely so as to leave out other vehicles while illuminating the surroundings with almost daytime-level brightness. A further design highlight: the blue luminous accents in the headlamps.

This is how easy parking can be: The Parking Pilot with PARKTRONIC and reversing camera makes it easier to find a parking space (either parallel to the kerb, oblique, or in garages) and to park in it. It assists in manoeuvring the vehicle into parking spaces and can steer and brake when an obstacle is detected.
The reversing camera and the Parking Assist PARKTRONIC help to prevent the risk of colliding with obstacles to the front, side and rear of the vehicle.
The information of the Parking Pilot with PARKTRONIC, the reversing camera and the PARKTRONIC Parking Assist is clearly shown on the display of the multimedia system.
Permanent monitoring of the tyre pressure increases driving safety and the service life of the tyres. The tyre pressure on all four wheels is monitored by sensors and shown in the multi-function display.
Reverse parking and manoeuvring is made considerably easier and safer with the help of the reversing camera. It is activated automatically when reverse gear is engaged and shows the area behind the vehicle (with dynamic guidance lines) on the display of the multimedia system.
Cruise control with variable speed limiter allows relaxed and fuel-saving driving especially on long journeys. In addition to the desired cruising speed the system also allows an individual top speed to be set, so as to be sure to comply with speed limits, for instance.
Cruise control with variable speed limiter ensures that the vehicle constantly maintains the set speed without the accelerator pedal having to be depressed. To this end the vehicle can also be automatically braked on downhill stretches.
The desired travelling or top speed is set via the controls on the cruise control lever in 1 km/h or 10 km/h steps and displayed in the instrument cluster. If the variable speed limitation is active, this is signalled by a yellow LED on the lever as well as a display in the instrument cluster.
The system makes it possible to spot one of the greatest hazards in traffic: vehicles in your blind spots. On motorways and in town driving, Blind Spot Assist can warn against side-on collisions.
In moments of lapses of attention the Traffic Sign Assist system can intervene lending a "helping hand" by recognising speed limits, "no-entry" and "no-overtaking" signs and their cancellation, and displaying them. If the appropriate signs are posted, the system issues a visual and audible warning when the driver enters a one-way street against the specified direction of travel.
This effectively helps the driver to comply with traffic rules, thus increasing road safety. This is particularly helpful on long, monotonous stretches of road with changing traffic signs, through road work sections, or on unfamiliar roads. Traffic Sign Assist displays any traffic signs detected in real time.
To do this, the images recorded by a camera located behind the windscreen are checked within fractions of a second against the signs stored in the system. At the same time they are compared with the data in the navigation system.

In dangerous situations the right decision has to be made in fractions of a second. The Active Brake Assist can support the driver and, in an emergency, act as quick as a flash.
This system can help to prevent or at least mitigate against the effects of accidents with vehicles ahead and with pedestrians crossing the road in front. It comprises a visual distance monitoring and an acoustic collision warning function, braking support appropriate to the situation and an autonomous braking function.
The system can warn of the risk of accident, assist with emergency braking and if necessary automatically brake the vehicle. With the aid of radar sensors and a stereo camera, it recognises vehicles ahead that are driving more slowly, stopping or at a standstill, as well as crossing traffic at a junction, vehicles at the tail end of a queue and pedestrians in the danger area.
If danger is sensed, the system warns the driver both visually and audibly. If the driver reacts to the warnings and brakes, the system boosts the braking effect in line with the situation, through to full brake application. If the driver does not react, Active Brake Assist autonomously brakes the vehicle.
At the tail end of a queue, if evasive manoeuvres are not possible, the tail-end emergency braking function can automatically reduce speed. This means an accident can be prevented at up to approx. 100 km/h or at least have its severity softened at up to approx. 130 km/h.

PRE-SAFE® PLUS adds to the already familiar occupant protection measures. The radar sensors in the rear bumper can detect an imminent rear impact.
If a hazardous situation is detected, the system warns the driver of the car following of the risk through flashing the hazard warning lights at an increased rate. It also initiates the preventive PRE-SAFE® occupant protection measures, including activating the reversible belt tensioners.
If the vehicle is stationary, PRE-SAFE® PLUS holds it in a hard brake. This reduces the strength of the jolt forwards, which can also help to reduce the risk of whiplash considerably.

In dangerous situations the right decision has to be made in fractions of a second. PRE-SAFE® can identify critical handling situations in advance and initiate preventive measures for occupant protection in the event of an impending accident. Its functionality covers reversible belt tensioning and other measures, the most recent of which is PRE-SAFE® Sound.
The system gives the vehicle occupants the best possible protection should an accident occur, through preventive measures. To do this, PRE-SAFE® continuously evaluates sensor data from other systems, such as the Electronic Stability Program ESP® and BAS Brake Assist System, and can identify scenarios such as heavy over/understeer and emergency and panic braking.
If a critical handling situation is detected, PRE-SAFE® can trigger different functions in fractions of a second. This includes the reversible belt tensioner, that automatic closing of open side windows and the acoustic passenger pre-conditioning PRE-SAFE® Sound.
Cars from Mercedes-Benz have a large number of safety systems to prevent accidents. Should the worst come to the worst, however, an extensive number of protective measures can come into play. They provide protection for you and your passengers as well as for other road users.
If no one is sitting in the front-passenger seat or a child seat is detected, the front-passenger airbag is automatically deactivated. In this way small children are protected from injuries caused by the inflating front-passenger front airbag. The presence of a child seat is detected by means of a pressure sensor.
The innovative system is able to assess changes in pressure and register whether the front passenger seat is occupied by a person or a child seat. The front passenger airbag is activated or deactivated accordingly. A display indicates the current status, "AIRBAG ON" or "AIRBAG OFF".
The fire extinguisher is mounted below the front of the driver's seat.
Should a head-on pedestrian-vehicle collision occur, in certain circumstances the rear section of the bonnet can be raised. The increased clearance from the components in the engine compartment creates additional deformation space to reduce the risk of injury for pedestrians.
In a severe side-on collision the headbags can cover the side windows, and thus help to reduce the risk of the head impacting the sides of the vehicle or intruding shards, fragments or other objects. This can help protect the driver and front passenger.
The system allows the easy, rapid and safe attachment of i-Size and ISOFIX child seats in the rear for the best possible protection of the child in an accident. Top Tether anchoring points offer added safety by anchoring the child seat behind the rear head restraints.
In the event of an accident the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system can help to speed up the arrival of the rescuers at the accident scene decisively. The data are transferred via a communications module with its own SIM card. A mobile phone is not required for this.
The rear-seat passengers' chests are protected by the sidebags in a severe side-on collision. They are integrated into the rear side panelling and inflate at chest height between the side of the vehicle and the occupants.
To reduce consequential damage after an accident and support the work of the rescue services, a number of different actions are initiated, depending on the type and severity of the accident. Assisting emergency services after an accident is an important part of the safety philosophy of Mercedes-Benz.
Every second counts when it comes to occupant rescue after an accident. That's why Daimler has devised the rescue sticker, a small but effective innovation that gives emergency services immediate access to safety-relevant vehicle-specific design details at the scene of the accident. The QR code stickers are affixed to the vehicle's fuel cap and the B-pillar on the opposite side. They can easily be retrofitted and are part of the series specification for all new vehicles. In an emergency, rescue services personnel can scan the QR code with a smartphone or tablet PC to rapidly and reliably access the appropriate rescue card, which will assist them in their work.
